Beginner's Guide to Hand-Poured Candles at Home

The first candle most people pour looks pretty good. The first candle that burns well, throws scent into the whole room, and doesn't tunnel or mushroom — that takes a little more understanding.

The good news is there are only four variables that matter: wax type, wick size, fragrance load, and pour temperature. Get those four right and you'll be making excellent candles consistently.

Wax Types Explained

Soy wax is the most forgiving for beginners. It burns clean, holds fragrance well, and is widely available. The downside is it can develop a frosty white bloom on the surface — purely cosmetic, doesn't affect burn quality.

Coconut wax has the best scent throw of any natural wax and a beautiful creamy finish, but it's soft and doesn't do well in warmer climates without a blend.

Paraffin is what most commercial candles use. Excellent scent throw and clarity, but it's petroleum-derived. We don't use it. Beeswax burns longest and has a natural honey scent but is expensive and doesn't carry added fragrance as well as soy.

Choosing the Right Wick

This is where most beginners go wrong. A wick that's too small will tunnel — the candle burns straight down the center leaving wax on the walls. A wick that's too large will mushroom, produce soot, and burn too hot.

Wick sizing is determined by the diameter of your container. Most wick manufacturers publish sizing guides for their wicks by container diameter. Start in the middle of the recommended range and test. Always burn a test candle for 4 hours and look at the melt pool — it should reach edge to edge without being overly deep.

Fragrance Load and Scent Throw

Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to wax weight. Soy wax typically holds 6–10%. Going over the maximum your wax can hold doesn't make the candle smell stronger — it causes the excess oil to pool on the surface and can create a fire hazard.

Add fragrance at the right temperature — for most soy waxes, between 180–185°F. Too hot and the fragrance volatilizes before it can bind with the wax. Too cool and it won't incorporate evenly. Stir slowly for two full minutes after adding fragrance.

Your First Pour, Step by Step

1. Melt wax in a double boiler to 185°F.

2. While wax melts, prepare containers with centered, tabbed wicks. Use a wick bar or two pencils to hold the wick straight.

3. At 185°F, add fragrance oil and stir for two minutes.

4. Let wax cool to 135–140°F before pouring (prevents sinkholes and frosting).

5. Pour slowly down the side of the container.

6. Let cure at room temperature for 48 hours minimum. A full week gives the best scent throw.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Sinkholes: Pour at a lower temperature and do a second pour to top off any divots after the first pour sets.

Weak scent throw: Increase fragrance load slightly, cure longer, or try a different fragrance oil — not all fragrance oils perform equally in soy wax.

Tunneling: Always do a full melt pool on the first burn. Never burn a candle for less than one hour per inch of container diameter on the first light.
